Library Tip #2
Finding Articles
This guide will help you find articles in the Olive-Harvey College Library using the online databases. It will also discuss how to access the online databases (remotely) from off-campus.
Online Databases
What is an online database?
An online database is a collection of articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as books and other materials that are available through the Internet, but cannot be found using Google or other search engines.
What kind of information will I find in them?
Depending on the database, you will find full-text and/or citations for a variety of sources, including:
- Scholarly and Scientific Journals
- Encyclopedias and Other Reference Books
- Primary Source Documents
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- Photographs & Illustrations
- Radio & TV News Transcripts
- Videos
- Government Documents
- Maps
- Websites
Why should I use them?
- They provide reliable, safe, and authoritative sources.
- Databases are regularly updated.
- They provide sources not available elsewhere on the Internet.
- Information is indexed so it is easier to find relevant results.
- Databases provide citation information for all the sources they contain.
- They can be accessed 24/7 - anywhere you have Internet access.
