Library Tip # 1

Finding Books

This guide will help you find books in the Olive-Harvey College Library using the online catalog. It will also discuss how to locate a book using a call number, and request books from other City Colleges of Chicago libraries.

How Are Books Organized?

The books in all City Colleges of Chicago Libraries are organized according to the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System.  In the LC System, each book is assigned a unique identifier know as a call number. The beginning of this call number will be a letter representing a subject from the LC system. A book's call number is located on its spine label and is also visible in its record in the library's online catalog.

Here's a list of all all LC subject classifications.

These classifications determine the first two lines of the call number.

The Library of Congress classification system uses alphabetical, numerical, and decimal order.  In general an LC call number will look something like this:

PS 3552 .A45 I4 2006

Searching the Online Catalog

The Olive-Harvey College Library online catalog allows you to quickly and easily search for books, ebooks, and movies available at the library.

Please note:    If you are looking for journal, magazine, or newspaper articles on a topic, you'll need to use the online databases instead of the online catalog.

You may search the online catalog by one of four ways: keyword, author, title, subject.

Keyword:  Type in the search terms (Examples: teen pregnancy, smoking effects)

Author:  Type last name, first name

Title:  Type in the exact title of the book

Subject:  Use Library of Congress Subject Headings (ask for assistance at the Reference Desk)

To access the online catalog:

1. Type in your browser: http://library.ccc.edu

2.  Enter your search terms.

3.  Click "Search"

Locating a book by the Call Number

Each book in the Olive-Harvey College Library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.

Call numbers appear on the spines of books and in the online catalog. In the catalog you can also find the location and availability/status of an item.
